Emergency Treatment For A Knocked-Out Tooth

Emergency treatment for a knocked-out tooth is an absolute must, as it may be possible to re-implant your tooth. Following the proper emergency treatment steps below can help you save the tooth and make successful reimplantation much more likely.

1. Retrieve the tooth

Immediately pick up your tooth with gloves, if possible, holding by the crown.  Without touching the root, inspect it for fractures or missing parts.

2. Gently rinse

Gently rinse your tooth to remove dirt or debris in a bowl of tepid water. Do this briefly without using running water, soap, or any other cleaning chemicals. Also do not rub or scrape the tooth to remove dirt. This will likely only damage the root surface, reducing the chances of the tooth’s survival.

3. Reinsert tooth

If you are unable to put your tooth back into the socket, transport it in your mouth, or in a container of cold milk or your own saliva.

Bring your tooth to the dentist or emergency room as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes. If reimplantation does not happen within 2 hours of the tooth being knocked out, the chances for success become poor. Successful emergency treatment for a knocked-out tooth depends on quick action.
