There are a range of possible reasons for bleeding gums. Some may indicate serious conditions, while others may not. In general, maintaining good oral hygiene can prevent it. Nonetheless some bleeding can occur from time to time. Here are 5 possible reasons for bleeding gums.
1.Gingivitis
This initial stage of gum disease is often a reason for bleeding gums. As it weakens the gum tissue, bleeding occurs more easily. Gingivitis is mainly caused by insufficient oral care that leaves plaque on teeth and along the gumline to harden into tartar. If left untreated, gingivitis will lead to more advanced gum disease(periodontits) and eventually to potential tooth loss.
2.Medications
Another possible reason for bleeding gums could be the consumption of medications that thin the blood and/or decrease blood clotting capacity. Aspirin and prescription blood thinners can cause gums to bleed. People using these medications should take extra care when brushing and flossing.
3.Poor Flossing
Poor flossing practice is often a reason for bleeding gums. Flossing should be performed consistently every day. Neglecting to floss for a couple of days and then starting again will cause gums to bleed. With consistent flossing, most bleeding will cease after in week.
4.Brushing or Flossing too hard
Overly forceful brushing and/or flossing are also reasons for bleeding gums. The common misperception that brushing hard with a stiff-bristled toothbrush will better clean away plaque and tartar causes many people clean their teeth and gums too roughly. The pain and bleeding this usually causes can be prevented by using a softer toothbrush and generally cleaning more gently.
5.Hormone Changes
Changes in hormone levels as a result of pregnancy or menstrual cycles, can cause women’s gums to swell and bleed more easily. This is condition is known as “pregnancy gingivitis”. Hormones change the body’s response to bacteria that cause gum disease, which results in inflammation.
Aside from more severe conditions, bleeding gums can be corrected by practicing good, consistent oral hygiene at home with a soft toothbrush and gentle flossing.
Water Flossing
In addition to regular dental visits, good consistent oral hygiene can only be enhanced by the use of interdental cleaning with water flossers such as the Aquapick AQ-230 and AQ-350. Both combine IPX7 waterproofing and ergonomic design to deliver effective cleaning convenience in a portable, cordless or space-saving, countertop model. Easily adjustable cleaning modes ensure superior water flow control and thorough deep cleaning between teeth, along and below the gum-line, and other difficult-to-reach areas of the mouth.
