Waking Up with Morning Breath

Most people experience waking up with morning breath at some point. Morning breath has many different causes, but the two biggest are dry mouth and bad oral hygiene.

Dry mouth

If you have poor oral hygiene, dry mouth could be to blame. Saliva removes bacteria that can cause bad breath. As we sleep, saliva production decreases significantly. Some medications can cause dry mouth, making morning breath even worse.  Dry mouth can also be caused by breathing through your mouth. People who sleep with their mouths open or snore heavily may have drier mouths, which could be why such people experience waking up with morning breath.

Food particles

Enzymes in saliva break down food particles lingering in between teeth, on the tongue, or around the gum line during the night. This breakdown releases volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), which give off a bad smell. The way people’s breath smells can be influenced by the specific foods they eat. The list of foods that can cause bad breath is long but includes:

  • asparagus
  • garlic
  • leeks
  • spices

Smoking

Smoking can also cause bad breath. Not only can it dry out your mouth, but also makes you more susceptible to gum disease. With the smoke smell added to the mix, smoking can be a recipe for rather offensive breath. This could be a reason why such people experience waking up with morning breath.

Poor oral hygiene

Inadequate oral hygiene could cause you to experience waking up with morning breath. Consistently brushing and flossing properly removes bacteria and food particles that cause bad breath. When people do not regularly and effectively clean their teeth, they may also develop cavities and gum disease. Gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis can cause bad breath. Bacteria that produce plaque cause cavities while trapping more bacteria in the mouth, as can the deep periodontal pockets that gum disease causes. As such, people can find it difficult to remove bacteria when they brush their teeth.

Water Flossing

Water flossing is an effective alternative and/or supplement to regular string floss, because of difficulties posed by effective string floss use. The steady stream of pressurized water emitted by a water flosser has been proven to reduce bleeding around gums significantly in comparison with string floss.  This makes water flossing a powerful factor in cavity and gum disease prevention.

The AQ-230 and AQ-350 water flossers from Aquapick are two models that deliver powerful cleaning capability highly suitable for any at-home oral hygiene routine. Their IPX7 waterproofing and ergonomic design provide safe, comfortable deep cleaning between teeth and gums, along the gum line, and other difficult-to-reach areas of the mouth. The cordless AQ-230’s compact portability and large 200 ml tank enable cleaning convenience anywhere.

The space-saver countertop AQ-350 uses smart start sensing technology to automatically clean areas often inaccessible to traditional toothbrushes and floss. Both models produce 0.6 mm ultra-fine streams of water that efficiently flush food debris and bacteria from between teeth. Multiple, easily adjustable settings make AQ-230 and AQ-350 appropriate for children as well as adults.
